Rubber gaskets and sealing washers inside gas appliances gradually dissolve and permeate in contact with gas - an over-limit gasket is a slow leak once installed. Mandatory certification annex 5.4.2.2 requires an n-pentane soak test; hand soaking with an uncontrolled room temperature produces a mean permeation figure from three samples that cannot survive a factory audit.
The apparatus follows CNCA-C24-01:2019 annex 5.4.2.2. Three gaskets or washers are soaked in n-pentane for the specified time, then placed in a 23C plus-or-minus 2C thermostatic bath for 24 hours and weighed; the mean hourly permeation of the three tests is calculated automatically with the same acceptance basis as the implementation rule. Two pressure fixtures hold and seal the samples, two measuring cups fix the volume and one precision balance completes the weighing - a complete kit ready to run. Sample preparation, soaking, thermostatting and weighing all leave records, so audit and certification submissions carry complete conditions, timing and data.
