A dishwasher softener works by ion exchange and regenerates with salt from the salt tank. Salt-level sensing looks trivial — float and reed, electrode conductivity, optical, load cell — yet it is where complaints concentrate. Damp salt bridges above the float and the float hangs in mid-air, so the tank empties while the lamp stays dark. Brine mud and crushed salt paste the float guide, the float sticks low and the lamp stays on. An optical window films over with salt and the light budget no longer supports a decision. Downstream the outcome is concrete: no refill means the resin saturates, glassware comes out with a white film and the heater scales, and the user blames the detergent. Or a freshly filled tank still reports low salt and one service call follows. The line check is usually “drop it in the tank, shake, does the lamp light”. Salt bridging, salt film and the signal margin after thousands of refills have no number.
