The problem

Phones, Bluetooth headsets, data cards and handheld medical probes must all answer the same question before release: after a fall from use height onto a hard surface, do they still work safely? A hand-held drop gives no control of height, attitude or impact speed, so ten tests give ten different results, and outside labs queue for weeks while every design revision waits in line.

Capability

Drop height is settable from 30 to 150 cm with an error below +/-1 cm, and the impact speed when striking the hard-wood template or granite plate from 1 m is 4.4+/-0.2 m/s, matching the free-fall condition of the standards. Two clamping heads are provided and can be switched at will: an electromagnetic chuck that takes a profiling fixture, and a pneumatic gripper, with the solenoid valve placed close to the head to shorten response time. Clamping force is controllable in the 18-30 N range, the specimen keeps its direction and position during the fall, and both sides release simultaneously and quickly so every drop starts from the same condition. Samples up to 10 kg are covered: mobile phones, data cards, Bluetooth headsets, handheld ultrasound probes, dental handpieces, patient monitor probes and electrosurgical pencils. Cycle count is settable from 1 to 999 with manual operation also supported, and fixtures can be supplied for different phone models. The test surface uses a 50+/-5 mm hard-wood board (above 600 kg/m3) and a granite drop plate; drops are made from the use height or 1 m, whichever is greater, in three starting attitudes per GB 9706.1-2020 15.3.4.2. The frame is rated for 100,000 cycles without damage, the drop area is fenced with foam to prevent a second impact, edges are rounded and the electrical system has leakage protection.
