Dehumidifiers that keep running with a full tank until water crosses the overflow and soaks the floor and the skirting; or the opposite, stopping with half a tank still in it, so the household gets a fraction of the water it should and assumes the machine is faulty. The float and reed switch arrangement has three weak points: scale on the guide rod jamming the float, a magnet ring losing strength, and a reed switch whose actuation point has moved. The line runs one fill test at the end of assembly, so whether the float still actuates at the set level after tens of thousands of fill and drain cycles, on an uneven floor, with hard water scale, is unknown before shipment — and the household gets either a flood or constant shutdowns.
