Borehole and deep-well pumps that deliver less water every season, run hot, growl and trip the breaker usually turn out to have worn impellers, sand-scoured stages, a worn thrust bearing and moisture creeping into the motor winding. Makers often verify little beyond "it turns and it pumps", so the head-flow curve, the efficiency point and the insulation resistance after a soak are unknown. When a pump is installed sixty metres down a well, a weak stage or a damp winding only shows up as a callback and a crane.
